By New Year I mean the year of the dragon, which started two days ago in an explosion of Fireworks in Beijing.

I’m doing my first concert of the year this thursday 26 of January at Temple.

Looking for new ways to express my creativity, I recently made two videos.

Those videos are a bit conceptual, I mainly used footage I shot along the years here in Beijing and elsewhere and edited it to fit the music I recently recorded live in Beijing (Live at Tushuguan 1,2 and 3)

Well actually nothing much, everything is closed apart from Temple, Tushuguan, Modernista and a few other places. Main venues like 2Kolegas, Mao Livehouse and Yugong Yishan don’t seem to be openned and have concerts or parties.

This time this recording is more electro. I used more sampling and toyed around with the sounds and instruments I have on stage. As usual, i did all this as a one man band, meaning i play all the instruments and manage everything myself  when on stage.

So What’s in Beijing this week end ?:

Well, it is the end of the Chinese calendar and we’ll be soon entering the year of the “Black Water Dragon”. People are deserting Beijing so it will be less shows for the coming 4 weeks. The Chinese new year is like Christmas in Europe, family gather and eat for days, it’s also the biggest migration in the world for millions of people go back to their hometowns from the big cities all at the same time.

In Beijing, firecrackers everywhere will light the skies and the streets for weeks, bringing noise, in an atmosphere of joy and chaos. I’ll be playing my next gig on the 26 of February in Temple while the dragon is dancing.

In Jazz:

The best harmonica player I know, Laurent Maur, is playing this friday night at Jianghu.

Let me start by saying i’ll be playing again this saturday night at Mako livehouse (located near Shuangjing subway station on the line 10). I’ll be sharing the stage with “Thank you for the fish”, the folk project from “Subs” singer Kang Mao. The band is quite interesting as it is a mix between the beautifully weird vocals of Kang Mao and some sort of revisited Chinese folk music. Take a listen at “Subs” here to get an idea of what that voice may sound with accoustic instruments playing for it.

So What’s in Beijing this week ?:

In Jazz:

On wednesday, one of my favorite Jazz guitar player in China, Lawrence Ku, is playing at Jianghu. 

My friends from the “Hot club of Beijing” are playing gypsy standards at Modernista.  Jazz singer Lulu will be singing Jazz at Fubar.

On thursday, Alex Morris, a great drummer, will be playing at East Shore café.

Xia Jia, one of the best jazz piano player in Beijing (He also plays keyboard for Cui Jian (The Chinese rock godfather)) is playing at East Shore on friday.

“Laurent Maur”, a very good jazz harmonica player and a friend of mine from Bordeaux is playing at East Shore this saturday.

Folk and Rock:

A band invited by the Swedish embassy, “Little marbles”, is playing on wednesday at Yugong Yishan. It’s pop, it’s full of bubbles, it’s like a sweet drink i wouldn’t drink too much of, like a Fanta or its equivalent here, Miranda… http://site.douban.com/littlemarbles/

On thursday, the interesting band to see should be “WHAI”, a band which has been recently created and that includes “Buyi” guitar player Zhang Wei and drummer Liu Miao, who also plays with “Lidong” and “Nucleus (Core)”. Those two guys have been in the music scene for so long that it is interesting to see what they do just because of that. (Didn’t find recordings for that one).

“Hanggai”, a band which is almost useless to introduce, is playing at 2Kolegas on friday. This band of Mongolian influenced music is getting more and more attention outside of China and will probably be playing a bunch of festivals around the world next summer.  http://site.douban.com/hanggai/

- Split Works, the organization behind the Black Rabbit Festival and many more things is turning 5 and is throwing parties all over China. The one in Beijing will be at Temple on the 7th of December.

- Chinese band Steely heart is releasing an album at Yugong Yishan on thursday 8th of December.  Not my favorite kind of music but could be interesting to see.  take a listen to their music on their douban here: http://site.douban.com/steelyheart/

- Still on December 8, you could also choose to go see some metal core at Mao livehouse…I’m not really sure about what metal core is, that could be the reason for me to go see that.
