Djang San – Haikou International Experimental Arts Festival – 30 and 31 of August.

I’m going to the island of Hainan this week to play at the HIYEAF, a festival in Haikou, the capital of the island.

If you are in the region, or even on the island for a holiday, don’t miss this festival that seems to be pretty cool.

I will be playing there on the 30 and 31 with my solo project for the first time in Hainan.

Here are some words on the festival from their website:

“The Haikou International Youth Experimental Arts Festival (August 23 – September 8) brings a diverse, engaging and international array of exhibitions and performances – including everything from a showcase of the best in New Wave film to heart pumping samba drumming to performance art exploring the journey from Berlin to Beijing – to the historic streets of Haikou.”

Here is the program (it’s on the website too):

Faust:An Experimental Qiong Opera by Anna Peschke

German artist Anna Peschke works in the areas of performance, installation, literature and fine arts. She studied philosophy and Applied Theater Science. Her latest works reinterpret traditional Chinese opera and include a Pekin Opera adaptation of “Woyzeck” and the musical performance “My Chinese Heart Sings you a Song,” which won the 2011 Berlin Opera Prize.

At HIYEAF, Peschke will take on Qiong Opera, a centuries-old traditional art form indigenous to Hainan. She will work with local Qiong performers on an adaptation of the classic morality play Faust.

“Faust“ is probably the most well known German drama, written by Goethe 200 years ago:  Professor Faust agrees to a contract with the diabolic demon Mephistopheles: in exchange for youth and love, Faust promises Mephisto his eternal soul.

Beijing Modern Dance Company “Oath (Midnight  Rain)”

The Beijing Modern Dance Company (BMDC) is the leading professional modern dance company in China. BMDC has received national and international acclaim from audiences, critics and experts alike for its diverse repertoire, one that integrates the traditional culture of China with influences from abroad.

In over a decade of existence, BMDC has been at the forefront of developing contemporary arts within China, as well as bringing “the face of modern China” to the rest of the world. The Company has held four annual China Modern Dance Showcases, inviting students and professionals from throughout the country and abroad to come together for artistic and intellectual exchange. The BMDC Training Centre provides classes and workshops for amateurs and professionals. Its mission is to develop not only skilled performers but also creative choreographers.

“Oath·Midnight Rain,”now a classic of the Beijing Modern Dance Company’s repertoire, was commissioned in 2006 for la Bienniale di Venezia. The show was hugely successful, selling out at every performance. La Bienniale’s director called it,“magnificent, beyond imagination.” The work blended China‘s long cultural tradition with contemporary. Elegant and filled with meaning, the five-part work created images that lingered in the minds of audiences around the world.

Utilizing the personification of flower, bird, fish, insect, and grass, which are representative elements with far-reaching cultural meaning and profound symbolic significance in traditional Chinese culture, Oath (Midnight Rain) explores the choreographer’s understanding of Buddhist Samsara, the cycle of death and rebirth and the liminal moment between night and day, between black and white, between ending and beginning. The choreographer seamlessly integrates traditional culture with contemporary aesthetics. Great tension is created in the stage image.

We Karaoke!: An Interactive Project by Elaine Ho + Sun Dasi

we卡拉ok! is an interactive karaoke project carried out in the urban public spaces of Haikou. Keeping in the spirit of the Haikou International Youth Experimental Arts Festival, we卡拉ok! will offer a lively and experimental proposition that will sound out on the streets of Haikou.

Lyrics to popular and easy-to-sing songs will be rewritten specifically for the local context by taking grassroots opinion surveys from residents and people with “the word on the street.” Answers to questions about Haikou culture and life will be transformed by a team of artists and musicians into fun and inspiring lyrics, and the performances will consist of a mobile karaoke station reminiscent of many of the outdoor karaoke/singing booths seen in cities all over China. The performers will consist not only of the artists, but also of anyone passing by. Performers will sing the songs they know and love (with a twist!). By changing the lyrics to these songs, the artists enable a new creation of popular culture, whereby the familiarity and comfort of an old song becomes a platform for sharing new ideas about the city.

Singapore T.H.E. Dance Company “Present”

新加坡T.H.E.

Two people locked in dialogue; a physical dialogue that discusses existence and being. One looks for reasons, the other seeks value. How far will this discussion take them and just what is their relationship?

In the five years since its founding, The Human Expression Dance Company (T.H.E) has become Singapore’s premier contemporary dance company. They have performed at major art festivals around Asia and all over the world, including France’s prestigious Les Hivernales festival. Driven by a desire to create an inclusive and nurturing platform for local and regional dance artists, T.H.E founded the first annual Singapore contemporary dance festival CONTACT in 2010, and formed a semi-professional training company, T.H.E Second Company, in 2008. T.H.E’s highly kinetic performances dig deep into the human experience, highlighting the minute details that often go unnoticed in contemporary life.

T.H.E resident choreographer Kim Jae Duk’s newest creation is highly physical and music-driven. Like his previous works, “Present” straddles pop and artistic worlds and considers the individual’s relationship to the larger society. Conceived with dancers Zhuo Zihao and Wu Mi, Kim’s existential exploration is tinged with dark humor. Part of T.H.E Dance Company’s annual Solo/Duet series, the piece was commissioned by the NUS Arts Festival 2013.

Paper Tiger Improvisational Theater “Style”

This is a live performance, a one-time meeting of musicians and dancers from different backgrounds and with a variety of artistic styles. The melding of these individuals and their interactions with each other is the central “style” of this piece.

Paper Tiger Theater Studio is a Chinese independent theater founded by theater director Tian Gebing and a group of artists, both amateur and professional. Paper Tiger’s work deals with the realities of contemporary life and uses theater performances as a pretext for creating greater freedom and social space. Paper Tiger emphasizes training actors to take on a wider range of roles and characters to further tap into the new language of contemporary life in China.

For almost fifteen years, Paper Tiger has maintained its independence from commercial and government sponsors. In order to preserve artistic control and freedom of expression, over 90 percent of its budget comes from the contributions of its own members.

Argentine Tango dates back to the 1800s. From its humble beginnings in the bars and brothels of Buenos Aires, tango gained a foothold with the city’s elite and became widely popular among the general public after it spread to Europe. Tango is still alive in Buenos Aires and in many cities around the world, danced at “Milongas” or dance parties, where men and women, old and young, singles, couples or families, will sit, eat, drink, socialize and dance to the alluring music of the Argentine Tango.

“During a Week”: A 7- Day Music Experiment by Martijn Tellinga

“During a week” is an exhibition sound piece. Over the course of seven days, seven musicians will individually perform every day in the same space for one hour. The time when they choose to perform on a certain day is left to their own discretion. They cannot inform each other of the intended moments of their performance, thus leaving the configuration of instruments at a given time and the succession of parts on a certain day to chance. Each part played prescribes slowly developing and repetitive actions of quiet and single sounds, actively relating to environmental sounds and movement in and around the performance space. Additionally, each part holds an instruction on extending the sound when other musicians happen to be present at the same moment.

For the 2013 Haikou International Youth Experimental Arts Festival, the piece will be installed in the courtyard of Zhongshan Street 102. The participating musicians play both traditional Hainanese and Western orchestral instruments.

Martijn Tellinga (1974, Netherlands) is a composer and performer of musical proposals and acoustical situations. His practice renders an ongoing meditation on the rudimentary condition of the sonic arts. Employing a variety of means and drawn from a reduced vocabulary, his work centers on the intuitive bending of (music) systems and the use of sound to express ideas of space and process.

He received a Master’s degree in Sonology and multiple stipends from the Netherlands Foundation for Visual Arts, Design and Architecture. He performs and exhibits his work worldwide. He is one of the curators for the concert series DNK Amsterdam. In 1999 he started the platform for experimental music Stichting Mixer, having organised numerous events and released over 25 titles today. In 2010 he was a visiting lecturer on Sound Art at the Shenyang Conservatory of Music. He lives and works in Amsterdam and Beijing/Xiamen.

Including aspects of concert, installation and performance, Martijn Tellinga’s work establishes transient and sculptural forms through sound. The scores for his instrumental works are often open-ended. They propose simple rules that provide performers with a way to listen, act and interact. Recently he has been installing sound pieces in the public space that engages the acoustics and structure of urban and natural sites.

Interzone Plays Burroughs: Multimedia Jazz by Mario Rom

INTERZONE PLAYS BURROUGHS is a cooperation between the music group INTERZONE (Lukas Kranzelbinder on double bass, Mario Rom on trumpet and Herbert Pirker on drums) and actor and speech-artist Christian Reiner. This performance is based on the work of American writer William S. Burroughs and draws its inspiration mainly from his groundbreaking novel, Naked Lunch. A mixture of performance, concert, reading and video-art, INTERZONE PLAYS BURROUGHS combines Burroughs’ highly associative literature with the heat and energy of improvised music and jazz.

Interzone is a band formed out of a need to play music at the most basic: without any rules or forced complexity. It members are three of Austria’s most promising young musicians: Mario Rom, already one of the leading trumpeters of his generation; Lukas Kranzelbinder, not only one of Austria’s most sought-after jazz bassists but also the composor of an opera; Herbert Pirker, one of the busiest drummers in Europe. Interzone has made a conscious choice to play without a chordal instrument in order to achieve more freedom, space, and flexibility. Their main interest lies in communication and in creating and composing on the spot: anything can – and will – happen.

For their 2013 performance-project INTERZONE PLAYS BURROUGHS, they’ve teamed up with Munich-born, Vienna-based voice artist Christian Reiner. Reiner is a speaker of poetry, fiction and experimental texts. He has worked on radio plays, theater projects, readings and concerts. He often collaborates with artists from different genres and is also a spokesman for film, radio, TV and theater productions.

Educated Youth: A Tang Desheng Documentary Photography Exhibition

In 1969, Tang Desheng, an independent photographer in his twenties, began his career by photographing the lives of the educated youth in Jiangsu Province, specifically around Changzhou. For ten years, he photographed young people who responded to Chairman Mao’s highest directive and became part of the generation that was re-educated by poor and lower-middle peasants in the countryside.

For more than ten years, during weekend free time and the vacations given after every one hundred days of work, Tang Desheng provided photography services for the educated youth and local farmers, recording images of their daily lives and working conditions. Tang stored several thousand of those precious negatives, but has never formally published or exhibited the photographs. In the most brilliant of these photographs, the historical memories of a unique generation are represented. We see in these pictures the understanding, sympathy, and respect that the photographer afforded the subjects he photographed.

Bérénice Angremy

As the saying goes, a decade makes a cause and a century a classic. The traveling exhibition Graphic Happiness brings an extensive overview of 100 years of Dutch Graphic Design. Including the works of over 40 Dutch designers, the exhibition contains both an overview of historic Dutch design icons and 24 solo presentations of contemporary designers. It shows both the history and growth of Dutch graphic design, highlighting its beauty and social relevance.

These colorful and joyful works also reveal a part of what triggers and enables Dutch designers to explore and research in such playful modes: the design practices – borrowing from the fields of art, advertising and research – that often result in grand, ground-breaking and boundless designs.

The designers included share two strong elements: the guts to be headstrong in pursuing their own design visions and the ability to think through process rather than outcome.

For the Haikou International Youth Experimental Arts Festival, the exhibition will include both a historical overview of Dutch graphic design and selections from six contemporary designers.  The result is liberated and playful and diverse, with photography, film, object-design, publishing, architecture, illustration and interaction design all featured.

Born in 1979 in Hamburg, Germany, Ole Aselmann currently lives and works in Beijing. He studied at the Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weißensee with Prof. Karin Sander, at the Munich’s Akademie der Kunste Munchen with Prof. Olaf Metzel and at the Chelsea College of Art and Design in London/United Kingdom.

He has been a fellow of the Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes (German National Academic Foundation) since 2006. In 2008, he was given the Stipendium Junge Kunst in Essen/Germany. From 2009 – 2010, he received a working fellowship at the Akademie Schloss Solitude, Stuttgart, Germany. He is the recipient of Berlin’s Supporting Award for young artists (NaFöG 2010), a working grant from the Stiftung Kunstfonds, Bonn, Germany (2011) and the DAAD German Academic Exchange Service Grant for Beijing, China (2012).

Traveling is a constant theme in Ole Aselmann’s work. In 2005, the “modern pilgrim” embarked on a hike from Upper Bavaria across the Alps accompanied by a sheep. Aselmann documented his experiences on this trip, from its early termination to the sheep’s return to its flock. Drawn by the possibility of an alternative to target-driven, improvement-seeking, forward-pushing Western individualism, Aselmann decided in 2009 to walk from Berlin to Beijing to explore what he saw as an alternative Eastern culture.

Over the course of a year, Aselmann walked some 10,000-11,000 kilometers alone through Germany, Poland, Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan and China. During this journey, Aselmann recorded his observations and experiences, his daily joys and torments in a diary. He also documented the absurdity of the symbols of globalization he encountered, from TV shows to radio programs to supermarket products. For the Haikou International Youth Experimental Arts Festival, Ole Aselmann presents a video installation of his journey from Berlin to Beijing in one of Haikou’s most popular bars.
