Djang San (Zhang Si’an) live friday evening and more…..

Hi !

Playing this friday night at Tushuguan.

I’ll probably record the show once again, like i did the last times i played there, and put it on the internet in the weeks following the event.

You can check the recordings here:

What else this week ?

Split Works, the organization behind the Black Rabbit Festival and many more things is turning 5 and is throwing parties all over China. The one in Beijing will be at Temple on the 7th of December.

– Chinese band Steely heart is releasing an album at Yugong Yishan on thursday 8th of December.  Not my favorite kind of music but could be interesting to see.  take a listen to their music on their douban here: http://site.douban.com/steelyheart/

– On the same day, French Horn Rebellion and Nova Heart join up for a good night of Electro – rock at Tango 3F. I like the new Helen Feng project.  I think that would be my best choice for that day. Check the sound here http://site.douban.com/NovaHeart/?ref=similar_sites

– Still on December 8, you could also choose to go see some metal core at Mao livehouse…I’m not really sure about what metal core is, that could be the reason for me to go see that.

http://www.cityweekend.com.cn/beijing/events/97603/.

– On that same day you could also see Lazy Camels at D22. I remember Lazy Camels to be a good band when i saw them one year ago, don’t know how they are now.

– My friends from the rock band Devil’s at the crossroads will be releasing their EP on friday 9th of December at Temple. I’ll probably get there after my gig at Tushuguan.

http://www.thebeijinger.com/events/2011/Nov/Devils-at-the-Crossroad-EP-release-party . This is my my best choice for that day.

Listen to my Electro – folk stuff here http://djangsan.bandcamp.com/album/live-at-tushuguan-vol1 and here http://djangsan.bandcamp.com/album/live-at-tushuguan-vol2

I just openned a Soundcloud account where i am in the process to put all my recent and better recordings.

Listen to it here: http://soundcloud.com/zhangsian

Apart from that what’s on in Beijing this weekend ?

On thursday, go see Alex Edward Morris jazz quartet@East Shore. Alex is one of the best drummers in Beijing at the moment.

As you may know DJ Krush is in town and will be playing at Yugong Yishan on thursday as well.

On friday, go to 2kolegas.  Still, if you don’t want to see me (cause you think i’m ugly or you just don’t like my music or anything else….), come after 11 pm or  go see  Buyi at Jiangjin jiu bar or Hedgehog at Yugong Yishan.

On saturday, go see”Arrows made of desire” at VA or “Devils at the crossroad” and “Flaming Heat” (the new band from Rustic’s former bass player Ricky Sixx) at D22, but you could also go see “Boys climbing ropes” from Shanghai at Yugong Yishan.

Playing at Temple on the 16 of November

Hi Everyone !

I’ll be playing my solo project at Temple on the 16 of November, which is next Wednesday.

Here is what City Weekend Magazine says about it:

“Keep your ears open as Zhang Si’an will bring his experimental

Chinese/French electro-folk music to Temple. We can almost guarantee

that you have never had an experience like this before. “

I have been recording a bit more than one song a week at home and everything can be listenned to for free

at http://soundcloud.com/zhangsian

Almost all of the music i have been doing in the last ten years can now be listenned to for free on Bandcamp

at http://djangsan.bandcamp.com/

What else in Beijing this week ?

Thursday: If you want to listen to the best jazz drummer in Beijing at the moment, go check Alex Morris Jazz Quartet every thursday at East Shore Café after 10 PM.

Friday: Last show for Mathieu (after 7 years of music in Beijing) with “Mademoiselle” at 2Kolegas, don’t miss what will be a great show and a great going away party, with lots of musicians being there it will probably end in a great jam. I did lots of music here with him and i can tell you the guy knows how to deal with a guitar.

Saturday: “Acid Live” Check that out if you want to party all night. The band has been joined recently by MC Felix, with whom i have collaborated in the past.

See you soon !

China, France, Africa

Hi,

Why this title ? Well, my brother Christopher Héry is doing an expo of the pictures he took in Africa last year, and that happens in Bordeaux (France), this friday:

Friends of mind, local band “No Code” will also be playing at the event.

If you are in Bordeaux and want to do something else than drinking

wine, like for example listen to a local rock band and possibly buy great

art photography from one of the best local photographer, it could be a

good choice for you.

I’ll be playing my “Avant-garde Electro-folk world music” (Somebody

told me that’s what it is….) the next day,  saturday at a new place called

“Lanxi”,(Blue stream) in Beijing. It’s at the crossroads between Gulou

Xidajie and Jiu Gulou dajie. It will start around 9h30 PM, as usual.

Take a listen here:

Other things to do this weekend in Beijing ?

Nothing inspiring me much on friday and saturday night except for

“Clippers”, an underground Taiwanese band i used to listen to when i

was in Taipei in 2004. Pretty crazy music, i never saw them live so I

might go. I remember there song “Shake Beer”, an analogy between

Shakespeare and beer…They’ll be playing at Jianghu on friday, not sure

if it’s the best place for them though. Check them

at http://site.douban.com/clippers/

You could go see “We’re still singing” at 2kolegas this sunday night

where the best of China’s underground folk musicians will be playing

including Xiaohe, Song Yuzhe, Laoda, Wang Juan, Migratory bird etc….

On the same day, French band “Microfilm” is playing at Temple, could be

nice too.

I know it’s Halloween so if you want to participate in this kind of things

you’d better wait until monday evening to see my Italian friends play with

Pet Conspiracy at Yugong Yishan. A few other Electro acts will be playing

that night, could be entertaining.

See you.

I’m playing this thursday at D-22 with two other bands,  “Marianne Dissard” (France-USA) and “Reload” (China)

I’ll be playing my new Electro-folk stuff as a one man band building all the songs live using loop machines, a keyboard, a guitar, my voice, and Chinese instruments.
If you don’t know what to do with yourself this thursday and see something different, this could be it.

Here is a presentation for Marianne Dissard:

Tucson chanteuse MARIANNE DISSARD’s last Beijing dates Sept 29th @ D-22 with Reloads & ZHANG SIAN + Sept 30th @Tushuguan 98.

Just off the Black Rabbit festivities, French-born, Tucson-based chanteuse Marianne Dissard presents her new album, “L’Abandon”, a cliff-hanging liaison between Chanson and Americana on two final solo shows in Beijing at D-22 on 9/29 with Reloads and compatriot JS Héry’s solo project, Zhang Sian and the next evening 9/30 at Tushuguan98 . The performance includes background video projection from Marianne’s film “Lonesome Cowgirls”, a western inspired by Andy Warhol. The chanteuse is spending three weeks in China this month, arriving by transsiberian from Europe and performing in Beijing, Jinan, Commune By The Great Wall and Shanghai, including two dates at the Black Rabbit Festival. A Beijing recording is also in the works.

Wuhan Daze, Shanghai Blaze – AIS & “La Fete de la Musique”
Her boyfriend took her back, but every time JS would get close to the front of the stage, she would grab his leg and try to jump back onstage

There we were, 3 guys on a plane setting sail for Wuhan. Upon arrival, we met what the weatherman had already grimly predicted: rain and more rain. But we didn’t want that to dampen our spirits; and it didn’t until it was time for us to go to the venue for the sound check.

Already because of the weather, the venue was changed from outdoors to indoors. So that night we were to play in Wuhan’s biggest live venue, the Vox Livehouse.

For those of you who are familiar with Beijing venues, it’s a kind of mix between Mao livehouse (with it’s gritty rock atmosphere) and D22 (with its 2 floors and grotty, graffiti covered bathrooms).

But as you might have guessed, the biggest problem was getting there: it took us nearly 2 hours to get a cab since all streets were flooded. We did finally manage to get there even though our cab broke down. When we started our show at 9pm, we were ready to rock. The crowd was pretty rowdy and occasionally some beer was thrown (luckily not at us). That night was hip-hop night, so our repertoire was not supposed to fit in, but it did!

People were excited to see us play, and at one point, a girl jumped on to the stage and started to try kissing with JS (Zhang Si’an) amongst other things. Her boyfriend took her back, but every time JS would get close to the front of the stage, she would grab his leg erotically and try to jump back onstage.

“Babies,” “In the Park,” “Escape,” and all the other songs were met with great enthusiasm, while “This Day” mellowed the predominantly hip-hop audience out. After the show, we didn’t have too much time to stick around as we had to find a “boat” back to our hotel in order to get ready for our morning flight to Shanghai for our second show.

We didn’t find a boat, but we did manage to find a taxi that broke down after 15 minutes – 2nd one in one day! It was all right though as we got back to our hotel and caught some zzz’s before boarding our plane.

In Shanghai, we were greeted with considerably less rain and Gabriel from the French Consulate in Shanghai. He took us to a nice old western style hotel that once provided accommodation to the likes of Albert Einstein and Zhou Enlai. Zhang Si’an used the opportunity to play some Zhongruan to mesmerize the guests in the lobby.

After practicing a bit and getting our instruments tuned up, we headed to the venue located in the city center of Shanghai’s “Xintiandi.” Only this time, it wasn’t in any rock livehouse, but in the lower level of a fancy shopping mall. It felt kind of a strange having to play there on a stage erected between all kinds of (French) luxury goods and watching passing shoppers watch the bands with mild interest. There were, however, seats arranged and there were plenty of people on them.

Still, we knew famous French folk singer Joyce Jonathan had played on that same stage the day before while 80’s French Pop music superstar Jil Caplan was going to play just before JS’ solo performance.

JS started with a solo set of his own music in Chinese including songs from his new project where he mixes elctro and folk music doing loops. He really got the audience into it, also playing on the Chinese instruments Zhongruan, and even getting the Chinese audience to sing in Chinese and clap their hands with him.

After opening the set with our usual song “Intro”, the crowd went wild and it felt like our songs had never met with such enthusiasm. We finished the show with our cover “Caravan” and wrapped it up with our version of Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” which certainly left the audience on a joyous note. Especially, when we started playing with our guitars on the ground, and our drummer Mao Mao started to beat that drum and did an amazing drum solo, like there was no tomorrow!

After the show we headed to our next gig at Mao livehouse in Shanghai. We’ve played in the Beijing one many times, but were curious to see what it’s about here. Mao live house Shanghai didn’t disappoint! It was huge compared to its little brother in Beijing, with excellent sound and 2 floors. Quite a few bands had already played before us, so the audience was pretty warmed up. It’s easy to impress a crowd in Beijing as we are used to playing there. But this was new territory and we had to play out of our comfort zone. We had to wait before getting on stage as other bands were playing before us. We couldn’t wait to perform as we were tired after two days of playing and traveling. Maikel took out his cigars out and we started smoking to celebrate.

I think we were so annoyed of having to wait so long that it put us in one of those moods where we urgently needed to play and scream our hearts out. As soon as we got on stage and strummed the first chords of music the crowd got wild, and I could see people were thirsty for more and we played our hearts out.

All in all, this small tour was a great opportunity to meet people and make new fans in southern China. To all you nan fangers (Southerners) over there: AIS salutes you!

The AIS and Zhang Si’an would also like to thank all the people and the “Fête de la musique” in Wuhan and Shanghai who made it possible – we hope to be back there again very soon!
